Don't Skip Stretching! Here's Why Stretching Should Be Part of Every Workout

Stretching is an often-skipped part of training. Many people finish their workout and immediately rush to the shower. That's a mistake! Stretching is crucial for health, recovery, and training results.

Why is stretching important?

1. Increases flexibility

Regular stretching increases the range of motion in your joints, which improves the quality of your exercises and daily movements.

2. Reduces the risk of injury

Flexible muscles and tendons are less susceptible to tears and sprains.

3. Reduces muscle pain

Stretching after training helps reduce soreness (DOMS - delayed onset muscle soreness).

4. Improves circulation

Stretching increases blood flow to your muscles, which speeds up recovery.

5. Improves posture

Stretching shortened muscles (e.g., chest, hip flexors) helps correct postural defects.

6. Reduces stress

Stretching has a relaxing effect, lowers cortisol levels and calms the nervous system.

7. Improves coordination

Better flexibility = better body control and fluidity of movements.

Types of stretching

Static stretching

What is it: Holding a stretch for 15-60 seconds
When: AFTER training
Example: Calf stretch, holding position for 30 seconds

Dynamic stretching

What is it: Controlled movements through a full range of motion
When: BEFORE training (as part of the warm-up)
Example: Leg swings, arm circles

Active stretching

What is it: Stretching one muscle by contracting the opposite one
Example: Raising a straight leg up and holding it

Passive stretching

What is it: Stretching with the help of a partner, equipment, or gravity
Example: A partner helps you stretch a muscle deeper.

When to stretch?

Before training

DO: Dynamic stretching (5-10 minutes)
NO: Static stretching on cold muscles - may increase the risk of injury!

After training

DO: Static stretching (10-15 minutes)
This is the best moment - the muscles are warm and flexible.

On days off from training

DO: Stretching sessions or yoga (20-45 minutes)
A great way to actively regenerate.

Basic stretching after training (10 minutes)

Hold each position for 30 seconds, repeat 2 times:

  1. Calves: Step forward, back leg straight, heel on the ground
  2. Front thighs: While standing, grab your foot and pull it towards your buttock
  3. Back thighs: Leg straight in front of you, lean forward
  4. Hips: Pigeon Pose (one leg bent in front of you)
  5. Back: Child's Pose - kneeling, arms extended forward
  6. Chest: Hands clasped behind your back, straighten your arms
  7. Arms: One arm across the chest, the other pressing
  8. Neck: Slight sideways head tilt

The most common mistakes

Mistake #1: Bouncing
Stretch smoothly, without jerking. Bouncing can damage muscles.

Mistake #2: Holding Your Breath
Breathe deeply and calmly. Exhaling helps you relax.

Mistake #3: Stretching Through Pain
You should feel a slight tension, not pain! If it hurts, reduce the intensity.

Mistake #4: Skipping Some Parts
Stretch your entire body, not just the parts you exercised.

Mistake #5: Too little time
Hold each position for at least 15-30 seconds.

Stretching and yoga - what's the difference?

Yoga is a comprehensive practice that combines stretching, strength, balance, and breathing. Stretching is just stretching. Both are great and can complement each other!

What to wear?

Comfortable, stretchy clothing that allows for unrestricted movement. Leggings and a fitted top are the perfect choice.

Remember: 10 minutes of stretching after your workout is an investment in your health that pays off. Don't skip this step!
