Summer is ending, but your fitness journey continues!
July is coming to an end, and with it the summer holiday season. For many people, it's a time to take stock and make plans for the fall. How can you stay motivated and fit all year round? Here's a complete guide!
Summarize your summer achievements
Ask yourself these questions:
1. What did I achieve this summer?
- Did I exercise regularly?
- Did I achieve my goals?
- What new exercises/activities have I tried?
- How do I feel physically and mentally?
2. What worked best?
- Which workouts did I like the most?
- When did I have the most energy?
- What motivated me the most?
3. What can I improve?
- Where was I inconsistent?
- What obstacles did I encounter?
- What do I want to learn/improve?
Why is it harder to train in autumn/winter?
Challenges:
- Less sun: Lower vitamin D levels = less energy
- Cold: It's harder to motivate yourself to go out
- Shorter days: Dark in the mornings and evenings
- More commitments: Returning to school/work after the holidays
- Holidays: Culinary Temptations
- Illnesses: Cold and Flu Season
How to stay fit all year round?
1. Set new goals
Summer goals over? Set some fall goals!
Examples of goals for fall/winter:
- Maintain regularity 3x a week
- Learn a new exercise (e.g. proper push-ups)
- Improve flexibility (yoga 2x a week)
- Getting ready for your spring run (training plan)
- Build strength (increase weights by 20%)
SMART principle:
- Specific
- Measurable
- A reachable
- Relevant
- Time -bound
2. Adjust your training plan to the season
Summer: Outdoors, swimming, beach, longer workouts
Fall/Winter: Indoor, gym, shorter but more intense
Fall plan:
- Sign up for a gym or group exercise class
- Invest in home equipment (dumbbells, mat, resistance bands)
- Download training apps
- Schedule your workouts in your calendar
3. Train in the morning
Why?
- In the evening it's dark and cold - it's easier to let go
- Morning training gives you energy for the whole day
- Fewer excuses
- A sense of achievement right from the start of the day
How to get started:
- Get up 30 minutes earlier
- Prepare your outfit for the evening
- Go to bed earlier
- Start with 2x a week
4. Find an indoor activity you enjoy
Options:
- Gym
- Yoga/Pilates
- Dance (zumba, dance fitness)
- Climbing (boulder)
- Swimming (indoor pool)
- Squash/badminton
- Trampoline park
- Online training at home
Try different things until you find IT!
5. Invest in the right outfit
Autumn/Winter outdoor:
- Layers! (thermoactive underwear + sweatshirt + jacket)
- Gloves, hat, ear band
- Reflective elements (dark!)
- Good shoes (non-slip)
Indoor:
- Comfortable, breathable materials
- A good sports bra
- Shoes for specific activities
6. Build a habit, don't rely on motivation
Truth: Motivation comes and goes. Habits stay.
How to build a habit:
- Fixed time of day
- Permanent place
- Start small (10 mins is better than 0)
- Don't break the streak
- Reward yourself for consistency
The 2-Minute Rule: If you don't feel like it, tell yourself "just 2 minutes." Often, those 2 minutes will turn into a full workout!
7. Find a training partner
Colder, darker, harder to motivate? Partner can help!
- Mutual motivation
- Commitment
- More fun
- Safety (dark at night)
8. Track your progress
Methods:
- Fitness apps
- Training journal
- Progress photos (monthly)
- Measurement
- Performance test (how many push-ups/squats/plank)
Why it's important: Seeing progress motivates you to keep working!
9. Take care of your nutrition
Fall/Winter = Season of Temptation:
- Warm, high-calorie dishes
- Holidays (Halloween, Christmas, New Year's Eve)
- Comfort food in bad weather
Strategies:
- The 80/20 rule (80% healthy, 20% fun)
- Plan your meals
- Healthy alternatives (soup instead of pizza)
- Don't forbid yourself - enjoy the holidays, but in moderation
- Drink plenty of water
10. Prioritize sleep
In autumn/winter we need more sleep!
- 7-9 hours a day
- Fixed bedtime/wake-up times
- Dark, cool bedroom
- No screens 1 hour before bed
11. Supplementation (if needed)
Vitamin D: In autumn/winter, there is a lack of sun - consider supplementation
Omega-3: Supports overall health
Magnesium: Muscle recovery, sleep
Consult your doctor before supplementation!
12. Be flexible
Not every day will be perfect. Sometimes:
- You are sick - rest!
- You're tired - do some light training
- You don't have time - 10 minutes is better than 0
- Lack of motivation - do "just 2 minutes"
Perfectionism = enemy of consistency!
